It is a GIFT from God - self-control is a gift! It sounds crazy or even illogical but a healthy mind and discipline come from Him. Don’t we all need this in our lives? Calmness (not timidity), well-balanced (not fearful) self-controlled (not cowardly) - this is the promise.Īnd, the great news is that this isn’t something we have to muster up just on our own. But the best bit for me is that the result of this spirit is a calm, well-balanced mind and self control. These are things I can get behind and want in my life. It’s a spirit of power, love, sound judgement and personal discipline. We could write books just on what the spirit isn’t! I love that he was encouraging him by suggesting that the spirit that came from God is not of timidity, cowardice or fear - I like that. In this verse above, Paul is writing to a young Timothy and is talking about his calling. I love to see what else verses can mean and other ways of exploring the purpose of the Word to us. The Amplified translation of the Bible is rich with meaning. “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline.
